April 22, 1934 to March 20, 2024
On Wednesday, March 20, 2024, Dr. Mulugeta Wodajo passed away peacefully in Bethesda, MD at the age of 89. He is the beloved husband of Woudnesh Ewnetu, and father of Felasfa and Tizeta. He raised as his own child Viticia Thames, the daughter of Woudnesh. He is survived by his granddaughters Leah and Hannah Wodajo and Abyssinia Hoover. His first wife Yeshi Emebet Imagnu passed away in 2004. He is the brother of Addis, Zemam, Kifle, and Solomon Wodajo, all of whom passed before him. He is survived by one sister Misle Wodajo, and many nieces and nephews.
Mulugeta was a member of the first few graduating classes at Tafari Mekonen school and the University College of Addis Ababa (UCAA), Ethiopia, which later became Haile Selassie University. While at UCAA, Mulugeta was elected President of the College’s Student Union, an early sign of his leadership. He completed his Masters in Education at Harvard University in 1957 and Doctorate at Columbia University in 1963, where he also served as President of the Ethiopian Students Association in North America. After completing his studies, he returned to Ethiopia to become Professor of Education at Haile Selassie University. Later he was promoted to be Dean of the School of Education and finally Academic Vice President of the University.
After the takeover of Ethiopia by a military dictatorship in 1974, he emigrated to the United States, to whom he was always grateful for offering refuge and a new home. Despite his deep patriotism, the worsening political situation in Ethiopia made it clear that accomplished professionals like him were no longer welcome. He continued his career at the World Bank where he helped support and develop the educational systems of many African and Asian countries, until his retirement in 1996.
He was a quiet man who was respected by all. He was a founding pioneer of higher education in Ethiopia and was deeply proud of his service to his country. He maintained strong bonds over many decades with friends and colleagues from his high school and university years. He was devoted to his extended family, to whom he provided selfless help and counsel. He was a beloved member of Debre Genet Medhane Alem church. He treated all with kindness and respect, and always chose not to speak ill of others.
ዶክተር ፡ ሙሉጌታ ፡ ወዳጆ ፡ በተወለዱ ፡ በሰማንያ ፡ ዘጠኝ አመታቸው ፡ እ.አ.አ. ፡ መጋቢት ፡ 20/2024 ፡ በቤቴስዳ ፡ ሜሪላንድ ፡ ከዚህ ፡ ዓለም ፡ በሞት ፡ ተለይተዋል። ዶክተር ፡ ሙሉጌታ ፡ የወይዘሮ ፡ ውድነሽ ፡ እውነቱ ፡ ባልቤት ፡ ሲሆኑ ፣ እንዲሁም ፡ የፈላስፋና ፡ የትዝታ ፡ አባት ፡ ናቸው ። በተጨማሪም ፡ የወይዘሮ ፡ ውድነሽን ፡ ልጅ ፡ ቪቲሻ ፡ ቴምስን ፡ ክልጅነትዋ ፡ ጀምሮ ፡ አሳድገዋታል ። የመጀመርያ ፡ ባልቤታቸው ፡ ወይዘሮ ፡ የሺእመቤት ፡ እማኙ ፡ በ2004 ፡ ዓመተ ፡ ምህረት ፡ ክዚህ ፡ አለም ፡ ሲለዩ ፣ ሁለት ፡ እህቶቻቸው ፡ ወይዘሮ ፡ አዲሰና ፡ ወይዘሮ ፡ ዝማም ፣ እንደዚሁም ፡ ሁለት ፡ ወንድሞቻቸው ፡ አቶ ፡ ክፍሌ ፡ እና ፡ አቶ ፡ ሰለሞን ፡ በሞት ፡ አልፈዋል ። እህታቸው ፡ ውይዘሮ ፡ ምስሌ ፡ ወዳጆ ፡ ብቻ ፡ በህይወት ፡ ይገኛሉ ።
ዶክተር ፡ ሙሉጌታ ፡ በጣም ፡ የሚወድዋቸው ፡ ሶስት ፡ የልጅ ፡ ልጆች ፡ ሊያ ፡ ወዳጆ ፣ ሃና ፡ ወዳጆና ፡ አቢሲኒያ ፡ ሁቨር ፡ አሉዋቸው ። ከዚህም ፡ በላይ ፡ ብዙ ፡ የወንድምና ፡የእህት ፡ልጆችና ፡ የልጅ ፡ ልጆች ፡ ባለጸጋ ፡ ናቸው ።
ዶክትር ፡ ሙሉጌታ ፡ የሁለተኛ ፡ ደረጃ ፡ ትምህርታቸውን ፡ በተፈሪ ፡ መኮንን ፡ ትምህርት ፡ ቤት ፡ ካጠናቀቁ ፡ በኋላ ፡ ከአዲስ ፡ አበባ ፡ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ፡ ኮለጅ ፡ በቢኤ ፡ ዲግሪ ፡ ተመርቀዋል ። ዩኒቨርስቲ ፡ ኮለጅ ፡ በነበሩበት ፡ ጊዜ ፡ባሳዩት ፡ የመሪነት ፡ ችሎታ ፡ የተማሪዎች ፡ ማህበር ፡ ፕረዚደንት ፡ በመሆን ፡ አገልግለዋል ።
ከዚያም ፡ የከፍተኛ ፡ ትምህርት ፡ እንዲከታተሉ ፡ ወደ ፡ አሜሪካን ፡ አገር ፡ ተልከው ፡ በ1957 ፡ ከሃርቫርድ ፡ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ፡ የማስተርስ ፡ ዲግሪያቸውን ፡ ሲያግኙ ፡ በ1963 ፡ ደግሞ ፡ ከኮሎምቢያ ፡ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ፡ የዶክተሬት ፡ ዲግሪያቸውን ፡ አግኝተዋል ። አሜሪካን ፡ አገር ፡ ተማሪ ፡ በነበሩበት ፡ጊዜም ፡ በሰሜን ፡ አሜሪካ ፡ የኢትዮጲያ ፡ ተማሪዎች ፡ ማህበር ፡ ፕረዚደንት ፡ በመሆን ፡ ሰርተዋል ።
ትምህርታቸውን ፡ ከጨረሱ ፡ በኋላ ፡ ወደ ፡ ኢትዮጵያ ፡ ተመልሰው ፡ በቀዳማዊ ፡ ኃይለ ፡ ሥላሴ ፡ ዩኒቨርሰቲ ፡ የትምህርት ፡ ፕሮፌሰር ፡ ሆነው ፡ ከሰሩ ፡ በኋላ ፡ በተከታታይ ፡ የኢዱኬሽን ፡ ፋካልቲ ፡ ዲን ፡ እና ፡ የዩኒቨርሰቲው ፡ የአካዳሚክ ፡ ጉዳዮች ፡ ምክትል ፡ ፕሬዚደንት ፡ በመሆን ፡ አገልግለዋል ።
የወታደር ፡ መንግስት ፡ ኢትዮጵያ ፡ ውስጥ ፡ ከተመሰረተ ፡ በኋላ ፣ በ1974 ፡ ዓ/ም ፡ ዶክተር ፡ ሙሉጌታ ፡ ወደ ፡ አሜሪካን ፡ አገር ፡ መጡ ። ምንም ፡ እንኳ ፡ ወደ ፡ አገራቸው ፡ ለመመለስ ፡ ጽኑ ፡ ፍላጎት ፡ ቢኖራቸዉም ፡ የነበረው ፡ የፖለቲካ ፡ ሁኔታ ፡ ሊፈቅደላቸው ፡ አልቻልም ። በዚሁም ፡ ምክንያት ፡ ካአገር ፡ ውጭ ፡ መቆየት ፡ ስለነበረባቸው ፣ በዓለም ፡ ባንክ ፡ ስራ ፡ አግኝተው ፡ ጥሮታ ፡ እሰከገቡበት ፡ እስክ ፡ 1996 ዓ/ም ፡ በከፍተኛ ፡ ኃላፊነት ፡ አገልግለዋል ። በተለይም ፡ በአፍሪካና ፡ በኤሲያ ፡ አገሮች ፡ የትምህርት ፡ አቋማትን ፡ በመመስረትና ፡ በማደራጀት ፡ ከፍተኛ ፡ አሰተዋጻኦ ፡ ስያደርጉ ፡ ቆይተዋል ።
ዶክተር ፡ ሙሉጌታ ፡ ሰዉን ፡ የሚወዱና ፡ የሚያከብሩ ፡ እንደዚሁም ፡ በሚያውቋወቸው ፡ ሰዎች ፡ ሁሉ ፡ የተከበሩና ፡ የተወደዱ ፡ ሰው ፡ ነበሩ ። ዶክተር ፡ ሙሉጌታ ፡ ከሁሉም ፡ በላይ ፡ የአገር ፡ ፍቅር ፡ የነበራችውና ፡ አገራቸውን ፡ በተቻላቸው ፡ ለማገልገል ፡ ባገኙት ፡ እድል ፡ ደስታና ፡ ኩራት ፡ ይሰማችው ፡ ነበረ ። በተለይ ፡ ትምህርትን ፡ በእትዮጵያ ፡ ላማስፋፋት ፡ በነበራቸው ፡ ጽኑ ፡ ፍላጎት ፡ እስክመጨረሻው ፡ ቀን ፡ ድረሰ ፡ የሚቻላቸውን ፡ ሁሉ ፡ ሲያደርጉ ፡ ኖርዋል ። ዶክተር ፡ ሙሉጌታ ፡ልጆቻቸውን ፣ ቤተሰባቸውንና ፡ ተማሪዎቻቸውን ፡ የሚውዱና ፡ ሰዉን ፡ ለመርዳት ፡ የሚጥሩ ፡ ነበሩ ። ከዚህም ፡ በላይ ፡ ክፉ ፡ ቃል ፡ ካአንደበታቸው ፡ የማይወጣ ፡ ሰው ፡ አክባሪና ፡ አገር ፡ ውዳድ ፡ እነደሆኑ ፡ ከዚህ ፡ አለም ፡ አልፈዋል።
